Went to the swapmeet with the crew last weekend and picked up this RCA-VICTOR radio for $20 bucks from a gent that rebuilds/refurbishes old school transistor tube radios. (Not sure of when it was made. Did some googleing and from what I can tell it was most probably manufactured sometime between the mid 1940's to early 1960's.)
I got home and realized that however much I really dug the aesthetic, I was probably never going to use the actual radio.
Started thinking ... And thought to myself ... "Self, this would make one heck of an iPod dock if I can figure out how to rig it."
I dug around in some boxes and found an iPod dock/speaker thingy that I'd never used before for no particular reason.
The rad thing is that it had a REMOTE as well.
I started to pull the radio and the iPod dock apart to see how I could frankenstein the 2 of them into one.
Below are some photos of the process.
Unfortunately in my haste, I forgot to take a photo of the radio before I pulled apart and missed documenting a few of the steps.
The only minor drawback is that because the casing of the radio is hollowed out now it has a strange hollow sound.
Interestingly, it adds to the "period" sound although the speaker inside actually has great sound. (Even thought it's mono.)
Now that I've figured out somewhat of a formula, I'll probably make several more to have around the pad.
