Mom and I spent yesterday in our old neighborhood exploring, seeing how things had changed (Or not) and visiting old friends.
My mother and I moved into this house in 1977.
She had gotten a Rockefeller Fellowship from the Rockefeller Foundation at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
She left her teaching gig at UMASS Amherst and we packed up and drove to Bergen street.
Fun Fact about this house:
Rodney Smith, Brunno Musso, Jeremy Henderson, Eli Gessner, myself and a host of others cut the first 40-50 SHUT SKATEBOARDS on the roof of 236 Bergen back in 1986 .
Lost my virginity to Anya Irons in the house.
As a Latch Key Kid, one of my household responsibilities was to do the laundry.
I'm amazed and pleased to see that the place I learned to do laundry is still there after 32 years.
SOMETHING NEW. Or maybe not. Was super excited to stumble across THE BROOKLYN CIRCUS.
This storefront had been a hair salon and later, a cab company during my youth.
Great to see it in it's present state.
Mom and I went in and saw some great product, equally great staff, KILLER Custom Harley, rad book selection.
When I got home did some online research on the BK Circus. If you are in the neighborhood, make sure to stop in.
PS. 261
I learned to play Kickball, Strikebox, Handball, Skellies, Steal the Bacon and a host of other games in this schoolyard.
Glad to see Community Bookstore is till there. We did not get to go by N'Kiru bookstore unfortunately. (Next time)
